GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

In the absence of the full time classroom teacher, the substitute teacher provides instruction, encourages student’s progress, and manages the learning environment.    A substitute is hired with the understanding that his/her association with the school district will be on an as needed basis.   Substitute teachers are paid at an hourly or daily rate, determined by the school district.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Implement existing lesson plans in a manner that ensures the integrity of academic time and motivates students to learn and participate
  • Instruct students regarding a variety of classroom topics and courses of instruction
  • Follow lesson plans as required by school and regular teacher
  • Adhere to all procedures, guidelines and policies followed by regular teacher in line with recommended teaching procedure
  • Assign reasonable tasks and homework to students in accordance with the lesson plans
  • Address the various learning styles of students accordingly
  • Model correct use of spoken and written English language
  • Demonstrate professional practices in teaching
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Supervisor of Special Education, and Division Superintendent.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Maintain classroom control that fosters a safe, positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school, state and all applicable laws and regulations
  • Ensure adequate supervision of students and the classroom environment to assure the health, welfare and safety of all students
  • Monitor students at all times
  • Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses and discipline problems to the school personnel immediately
  • May supervise students in out-of-class setting (e.g., assemblies, lunchroom, recess)
  • Ensure a sustainable relationship with pupils, school personnel and members of the public by communication in a confidential, polite and refined manner

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Be at least 21 years old (may be 18 years old to substitute as a para-educator), or hold a Bachelor's Degree
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate, and
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Pass the Sub Assessment with a composite score of at least 80%, and provide the certification to the Human Resources Department. If you hold a Bachelors or Master’s degree in Education you do not need to take the assessment.
  • Present the Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, may be required.  Other limited physical activities are required.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the substitute is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required.
