JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the CTEC principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students.  Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student.  Supervise students in a variety of school related settings.  Plan instruction, monitor and evaluate student outcomes.  Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and the community.  Ensure that students learn the practical skills to work in the Firefighter field and that they safely and effectively operate the equipment and perform skills used in this career.  The Firefighter  course emphasizes safety, procedures, equipment and tool use while preparing students to take the Firefighter I and II certifications.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Plan a program of study that meets the requirements of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs for Firefighter I and II certifications and, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests and abilities of students;
  • Develop authentic, engaging, hands-on learning lessons;
  • On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated;
  • Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives;
  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students;
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of school administration;
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicate these objectives to students;
  • Must maintain all required VDFP course records and documentation as required by the VDFP;
  • Establish learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, requirements of Virginia Fire Programs curriculum framework;
  • Adequately prepare students following the guidelines of the Department of Fire Programs for passing HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, Fire I and Fire II certifications;
  • Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques, which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives;
  • Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, Culpeper County School Board policy, the Department of Labor (OSHA 10) and administrative regulation;
  • Furnish required reports within specified timelines with regard to scheduling and instructional activity as requested by the school administration;
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
  • Make provision for being available to parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual;
  • Develop and maintain contacts and partnerships with Culpeper Fire and EMS, Culpeper County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association, and VDFP Division 2; 
  • Plan coordinate, and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers needed to meet VDFP ratio requirements for low, moderate, and high risk skills assessments; 
  • Maintain required instructor certifications required by VDFP; 
  • Attend all CTEC staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required including the Career and Technical?Advisory Council;
  • Participate in student CTE organizations, workshops, and competitions (SkillsUSA.) 
  • Take part in promoting and marketing the program to meet enrollment goals, ensuring that all potential students understand the benefits and demands of a career in Firefighting;
  • Communicate with students’ high school counselors and administration concerning academic, attendance, or discipline issues which affect a student’s learning and/or grades;
  • Must stay current with changes that occur in the Department of Fire Programs;
  • Performs other assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • VDFP Fire Instructor II; 
  • VDFP Current Standard year Firefighter Train-the Trainer; 
  • VDFP Current Standard year HAZMAT Operations Train-the-Trainer;
  • Possess or qualify for a professional license and appropriate endorsement as presented by the Virginia Department of Education; 
  • Be recommended by the Division Superintendent and approved by the School Board;

  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education. 
  • Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum. 
  • Ability to respect confidential information and the individual’s right to privacy. 
  • Ability to communicate openly and effectively with students, colleagues, administration, parents, central office and community patrons and partners. 
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills, technology skills, be detailed and team oriented, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Responsible for assisting in all aspects of the program, including the organization, accreditation, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of the program. 
  • Model professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions within the school and within the community. 
  • Ability to follow VDFP Course Documentation and course close out process.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed in the central office and throughout the division. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment exposes the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, and parents is required. Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees.  To ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization, employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule. EVALUATION:

The CTEC Principal will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
