GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Transports school bus passengers between assigned stops and schools according to specified routes and time schedules. Maintains order during trips and adheres to safety rules when loading and unloading passengers.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/task:

  • Must be 21 years old.
  • Secure a commercial drivers license.
  • Must be available for training.
  • Must be willing to have drug and alcohol testing.
  • Be knowledgeable of all state and state regulations pertaining to all aspects of school bus safety.
  • Be courteous and helpful to all parents and students.
  • Be familiar with all aspects of your route and report any safety problems encountered.
  • Keep current on addenda to your transportation handbook.
  • Insure that all children act and behave accordingly in the best interest of safety.
  • Keep the mechanics informed of any problems with your school bus.
  • Attend all in-service and safety meetings related to transportation.
  • Keep school principal informed of children who are encountering problems on the school bus.
  • The driver will be on the school bus during loading or unloading of the bus.
  • Keep accurate records related to student information and mileage.
  • Keep your daily schedule and be on time.
  • Keep supervisor informed of any time you are not able to drive your bus.
  • During bad weather pay close attention to weather related issues.
  • Keep your school bus clean and tidy.
  • Check your bus with the regular inspection check-off before and after each run.
  • In event of emergency follow approved guidelines in place.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff and administration as a positive representative of Culpeper County School system.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • General Knowledge of the county; skill in the safe operation of a school bus;
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment;
  • Ability to assist children using patience and understanding;
  • Must be able to follow oral and written directions, and maintain good working relationships with all employees and the public. 
  • Other such qualifications that the school board might accept in lieu of any of the above
  • Be recommended by the division superintendent and appointed by the school board

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidate must possess any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.  Candidate must possess a current Virginia School Bus Driver Training Certificate. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidate must be at least 21 years of age;
  • Candidate must possess valid Virginia Commercials Driver’s License with Air Brake, School Bus and Passenger Bus endorsement
  • Candidate must satisfy an annual physical examination for employment as a school bus driver by a physician licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • Candidate must satisfy all other requirement of the State Board of Education for persons employed to drive a school bus;
  • Candidate must attend the Behind-the-Wheel-Training, conducted/lead by the CCPS Director of Transportation;
  • Candidate must submit to random and post accident drug testing;
  • Candidate must demonstrate professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions within the school and within the community

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in the central office and throughout the division.  Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required.  Other limited physical activities are required.  Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Regular contact with staff members, administrators, and parents is required.  Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
