GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
To develop a competitive and representative team in the sport to which he/she is assigned with emphasis on the development of young people in terms of teamwork, leadership, character, athletic skills, and wholesome attitudes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Monitors supervision of team and student athletes after school hours;
- Works with the Athletic Director to develop schedules for athletic events including practice schedules;
- Assists in maintaining high academic standards for all student-athletes;
- Assists the Athletic Director and Principal in the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches;
- Works cooperatively with other head athletic coaches in order to operate a well-balanced athletic program;
- An attitude of good sportsmanship and a sense of pride in self, team, school, and community;
- Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the varsity athletic team and to lead, supervise, and assist the assistant coaches in their efforts with the team assigned to them;
- Recommend to the Athletic Director and/or Principal the removal of athletes from the team(s) when training or eligibility regulations have not been met;
- Ensure that all athletes have undergone and passed medical examinations before the regular practice season begins;
- Organize a system for encouraging students to try out for his/her team and to develop and recruit equipment manager(s), scorekeepers, statisticians, ball runners, etc;
- Collect and keep on file records, statistics, new items, and photographs for all the athletic teams under his/her supervision;
- Recommend to the Athletic Director, upon request, prospective coaches;
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills;
- Demonstrates regular attendance and punctuality;
- Adheres to the appropriate code of ethics;
- Performs other duties consistent with the position assigned as may be requested by the Principal or Athletic Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Excellent organization skills;
- Coaching experience and participation in the sport which you are applying for on high school or college levels;
- Completion of CPR and First Aid training or enrollment in current CPR and First Aid training course;
- Prefer a Virginia Teaching License candidate or a full-time classified employee for Culpeper County Public Schools;
- Knowledge of Virginia High School League policies, procedures and regulations; and
- Other such qualifications that the school board might accept in lieu of any of the above.
- Be recommended by the division superintendent and appointed by the school board.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Duties performed typically in the central office and throughout the division. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, and parents is required. Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
